From Issue Nine’s list of Pushcart nominations comes truly stupendous news: Rick Barot’s “UDFj-39546284” is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize! This poem, a gorgeous rendering of human distance—as vast as the cosmos, into which our “seeing and non-seeing” cedes empathy only in hindsight—was a pleasure to read and publish. We’re extraordinarily proud that, soon, others will be able to enjoy this poem as much as we do!

Spring 2017 / Issue Nine Launch Party!

Mark your calendars for April 4th—we’ll be hosting a launch party in celebration of Arroyo‘s newest issue! Located at Hayward’s The Bistro, Issue Nine will release with complimentary refreshments, a prize raffle, and readings from some of the lovely writers that can be found inside this volume. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m.; meanwhile, keep an ear to the ground for more information as April rolls around!
A Submissions Update
Since our reading period began in December, we’ve logged well over a hundred submissions and are looking forward to seeing many more! Before our busiest months arrive, however, we’d like to take this moment and announce two changes to our Submission Guidelines. Firstly, we want to emphasize that we do not accept submissions over e-mail, although writers and artists are certainly welcome to contact us with their concerns. Secondly, we must—unfortunately!—state that we do not write or publish book reviews. Please avoid sending us your forthcoming publications, as our editors will not be able to respond to them.
As always, however, we’re on the lookout for superb prose and poetry. If you have work you’d like to see in Arroyo, send it with a SASE and we will get back to you as soon as we can!
See Arroyo @ AWP 2017!
We’ll soon be writing from AWP—hosted this year at the nation’s capital! From February 9th till the 11th, visit us at booth 331-T for an exclusive copy of our new Issue Nine: featuring lush cover art from Brad Kunkle, a portfolio of lotería by Marina Pallares, and a collection of stories and poems from writers across the country. Three of these wonderful writers will be available for signings from 2 till 3 p.m., with Michelle Ross (“Glow” and “Parts We Can Live Without”) visiting Thursday; Judith Skillman (“Kafka’s Nocturne” and “The Old Laughter”) on Friday; and Joan Frank (excerpt from All the News I Need) present this Saturday.

Until May 31st, we are accepting manuscripts of short fiction, poetry, and narrative nonfiction for Issue 10 of Arroyo Literary Review. Keep your ear to the ground, also, for news of a possible anniversary event…
